You don’t need to be an "artist" to do art therapy. During a time for art therapy or creative expression, it's not about something "good" or "pretty." It’s a way to give a memory or a feeling a shape or something that's more tactile. When you can see it and move it around, it’s easier to understand. This is because creative expression allows us to bypass the logical, "wordy" side of the brain and tap into the part of us that speaks in images and sensations. It’s a way to reach the feelings that words alone can’t quite catch.
Traditional talk therapy is a powerful way to heal, but some of our most important experiences live in the parts of our brain that simply don’t speak in words. When we use art therapy, we are tapping into those deeper, image-based layers that talk therapy sometimes can't reach. Through the process of creating, we bring what is hidden into the light, where it can finally be seen, understood, and woven into the story of who you are.
You don’t have to worry about your art being "analyzed." I’m not here to interpret your work or tell you what a certain color or shape represents. You are the expert on your creation. I’m here to hold the space and offer curiosity. We'll explore what came up for you during the process and see what insights your image might have for you.
You might wonder, how does art therapy work through a screen? Well... we simply use the supplies you already have on hand. There’s a special kind of magic in repurposing things around your house; it can even turn your own environment into a part of the healing process. You don't need a professional art studio to do this work; you just need a little bit of space and whatever tools feel right to you that day; whether that’s a pencil, a pen, or even just some scraps of paper.
